Frequently asked questions.
Everything about the beta, your account and devices, linking your libraries, the economy, completions, the store, and how we keep the leaderboards honest. Search below, or browse by topic.
Getting started & the beta
GameSave is a Windows desktop app that pulls your Steam, GOG, Epic, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft, itch.io and retro libraries into one place and turns playing and finishing them into a progression system. You earn GameScore (GS), Credits (CR) and XP, unlock achievements, complete daily challenges, spend Credits in an in-app store, and climb global leaderboards - all in one dark, console-style hub.
Yes - GameSave is free to download and play, and the core app stays free forever. Your PC Games library, your Career profile and the Pulse hub are always free, and every extra page can be unlocked with Credits you earn in-app just by playing. The only parts that cost real money are entirely optional - an optional membership called GameSave Pro and optional donations - and neither is ever required to use GameSave fully.
No - GameSave is now in open beta and free for everyone. Just go to the home page, create your account, and download the app. No invite key required.
GameSave runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It's a lightweight desktop app with auto-updates built in, so you're always on the latest build. Native support for other platforms is on the long-term roadmap.
Automatically. When a new version is available, GameSave downloads it and swaps itself in on the next launch (keeping a backup of the previous build), so there's nothing to install by hand.
Your account & your devices
Yes - one GameSave account (email, username and password) holds your library, progression, wallet and rank. You'll need to verify your email address before you can sign in, which keeps accounts and the leaderboards legitimate.
Go to gamesave.app and use the password-reset flow; we'll email you a secure link to set a new one. Your password is only ever stored as a salted hash, so we can't read it or send the old one back to you.
Yes. One GameSave account can be signed in on up to 3 PCs at the same time. Just install GameSave and sign in on the other machine - there is nothing to transfer and no re-purchase. If you reach the limit, you can free up a slot any time from Settings → Devices, which signs the chosen PC out on its next check-in.
You can keep using GameSave offline for up to 72 hours. While you're online it quietly re-checks your access with the server every few hours, so normal use is seamless.
Yes - GameSave keeps automatic per-game save backups. When you finish a play session it finds that PC game's save folder and quietly keeps a timestamped copy in a Saved Games folder (it skips when nothing changed, and never interrupts your game). Free members keep the latest backup per game; GameSave Pro keeps the last 3. Turn it on or off, point it at a custom folder, or restore a backup from Settings → Save Backups.
A suspension is a temporary lock until a set date. A revocation or ban means the activation was pulled - for example, a code used against our terms. If you think it's a mistake, contact support and we'll take a look.
Yes - you can change your username at any time from your profile in the app. To delete your account, reach out via the app or the contact form - deletion removes your personal details, though anonymized platform links are retained so the one-account-per-platform rule that protects the leaderboards still holds. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Linking platforms & your library
Steam, GOG, Epic, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft and itch.io link directly, and you can add retro ROM libraries. GameSave layers on top of your existing launchers - it never replaces them.
We never see your store passwords. Linking verifies your account against each platform's own API using the session you're already signed into; we keep only what's needed to confirm ownership, and any stored tokens are encrypted.
Linking verifies the games you actually own, so your progression and leaderboard standing are legitimate. You also earn 25 CR for each platform you connect, plus a 100 CR bonus the first time you connect one.
Yes, at any time. Unlinking revokes the connection and clears the stored credentials. The underlying account mapping is retained so leaderboard integrity is preserved.
To keep the leaderboards honest, each platform account can be linked to exactly one GameSave account, permanently. Without that rule, someone could spread activity across many accounts to climb the rankings unfairly.
The economy: GameScore, Credits & XP
GameScore (GS) is your lifetime prestige score - it only goes up and it is what the global leaderboards rank you on. Credits (CR) are the spendable currency you earn by playing and spend in the store and on page unlocks. XP fills your level bar; leveling up raises your rank, unlocks features, and pays a Credits bonus of 250 CR for each level you gain.
Lots of ways: claim your daily reward (a flat 50 CR), complete daily challenges (5-15 CR each by difficulty, plus matching XP and GameScore), add games to your library (a sliding scale, below), unlock achievements (from a few dozen up to several thousand CR, set per achievement), and level up (250 CR for each level you gain). Opening the app once a day is itself the daily reward above.
Yes - routine, repeatable activities are capped at 500 CR per day so the wallet can't be ground infinitely. Big one-off rewards (your daily reward, achievements, level-ups, challenge completions, lifetime milestones and adding games) are exempt from that cap.
Adding games pays on a sliding scale tied to your lifetime library size - about 20 CR each for your first 20 games, tapering down toward 1 CR past ~1,280. It keeps early progression rewarding while preventing someone from mass-importing a giant library just to mint Credits.
No - Credits are always earned by playing, never bought. The in-app store only lets you spend Credits you have already earned, and you cannot convert real money into Credits. GameSave does have optional real-money options - the GameSave Pro membership and optional donations - but neither one sells Credits.
If you hit the daily Credit cap, part of the overflow can roll into a small bank (up to 1,000 CR) that trickles a little back to you each day. It slowly decays, so it rewards steady play instead of letting Credits pile up forever.
Completions, challenges & daily rewards
Marking a game complete charges a 250 CR fee and pays back +50 CR - a net cost of about 200 CR. Marking a game 100% pays an extra +150 CR bonus on top. Completing games also unlocks achievements that build your GameScore and leaderboard rank, so this friction tax is a deliberate anti-cheat measure - it stops people spam-completing games to inflate their standing.
Each day you get a fresh set of challenges (Easy / Medium / Hard) that reset at midnight Pacific. Completing one pays Credits by difficulty - 5 CR for Easy, 10 CR for Medium and 15 CR for Hard - plus the same amount again in XP and GameScore. Don't like today's roll? You can re-roll a challenge for 100 CR. There are also bigger weekly challenges with larger goals.
Your daily reward is a flat 50 CR, claimed automatically the first time you open the app each day, and it is exempt from the daily Credit cap - there is no escalating multiplier on it. On top of that, each day brings a fresh set of daily challenges (Easy / Medium / Hard) that pay more Credits, XP and GameScore as you play and finish games.
Pages, customization & the store
GameSave is organized into pages: your PC Games library with a rich detail view for every title; your Career profile (Overview, Activity, Leaderboards, Stats, Achievements, Platforms and Settings tabs); Pulse for daily activity and news; plus History, Backlog, Completed, Journal, Retro, Speedrun, Spotlight and the Store. There is also an in-game overlay, automatic save-game backups, friends and messaging, and a full speedrun timer.
Your PC Games library, the Career profile and Pulse are always free. The extra pages - History, Backlog, Completed, Journal, Retro, Speedrun, Spotlight and the Store - are unlocked individually with Credits you earn in-app, or all at once with an optional GameSave Pro membership. You never have to pay - everything unlockable can be earned by playing.
Cosmetics and convenience, all bought with earned Credits: background images (~150-300 CR), the full Theme upgrade (a 16-million-color picker, gradient backgrounds and custom navbar colors), the GS Launcher quick-launch overlay, Power-User keyboard controls, and the page unlocks above. Everything in the store is bought with Credits you earn - there is no real-money store.
The GS Launcher is a quick-launch overlay: tap a hotkey (default Ctrl+Shift+L) and a small on-screen cross of your 4 pinned games appears, so you can jump straight into a game with an arrow key or click. It is a one-time store unlock (3,000 CR) or free with GameSave Pro.
Plenty. Pick from preset themes and accent colors, or unlock the full Theme suite (a 16-million-color picker, gradient backgrounds and custom navbar colors) from the store or with GameSave Pro. You can also upload your own background images and set a custom avatar (up to 5 MB).
GameSave Pro
GameSave Pro is an optional paid membership. While it is active it unlocks every gated page (Retro, Backlog, History, Speedrun, Completed, Journal and Spotlight) and the premium Career add-ons (analytics, leaderboards, statistics and the activity log), gives you a Pro badge and avatar frame, the GS Launcher and Power-User keyboard tools, the full Theme suite, higher limits, a new exclusive cosmetic every month, and a +2,000 CR monthly stipend. It is purely a convenience - the free app stays fully usable, and anything you have unlocked with Credits is still yours.
You can pay monthly ($9.99), quarterly ($24.99) or yearly ($89.99, the best value at about 25% off the monthly price). There is also a one-time Lifetime (Founder) option at $149.99 while the launch offer lasts, which keeps Pro for the lifetime of GameSave plus a permanent Founder badge. You can also unlock Pro by donating $9.99 or more (see below).
GameSave Pro is a membership, so its perks (the gated pages, the stipend, the Pro cosmetics) are active while your membership is. Anything you bought outright with Credits - like an individual page unlock - is yours to keep forever, even if your Pro membership lapses. In short: Pro rents the whole bundle; Credits buy a page to own.
Open the Pro window in the app (or Settings → Membership) and choose Manage subscription - it opens the secure Stripe billing portal where you can upgrade, downgrade or cancel. If you cancel, your benefits continue until the end of the period you have already paid for. Lifetime never needs renewing.
Yes, and it is completely optional. You can donate by card or Bitcoin from the Donate button in the app. As a thank-you, donations of $9.99 or more also grant GameSave Pro for a matching length (and the top tier grants Lifetime). Donations help fund servers and development - they are never required to use any feature.
Speedrunning
Yes - GameSave has a full speedrun timer built in. Time runs with RTA and in-game time, define your own categories and splits per game, and GameSave automatically tracks your personal bests and gold segments across an attempt history.
Runs are integrity-checked and can be ranked on the speedrun leaderboards. As with the rest of GameSave, the server is the source of truth, so the boards stay fair.
Friends, presence & messaging
Add friends by their GameSave ID, then see their live presence - online, away, or offline. You choose your own status, including invisible (you appear offline but can still see your friends and receive messages).
Your 1:1 direct messages are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM on the server, with delivery and read receipts. You can block anyone and control who's allowed to message or friend you.
Yes - Share buttons across the app turn a completion, an achievement, your profile or a speedrun into a polished share card you can save as an image or post straight to Discord.
In-game overlay
It's a stats overlay you summon over any running game with a hotkey (default Ctrl+Shift+G, rebindable). It shows your session timer, Credits, level and achievements, and lets you read and send messages - then dismiss it to get back to the game.
Yes. The overlay is a separate window composited on top of the game - it is never injected into the game process, so it doesn't trip anti-cheat. It also doesn't steal input focus when it opens.
Retro & RetroAchievements
Yes - retro is first-class, not an afterthought. Add ROM libraries per console with multi-disc support, custom emulator/core overrides, playtime tracking, personal ratings, tags and completion tracking, right alongside your PC games.
No - GameSave can set up RetroArch for you automatically. It is bundled with the installer, set as the default emulator for every console, and the right cores download in the background, so pressing Play on a ROM just works. You can still override the emulator or core per game if you prefer.
GameSave hashes your ROM and checks it against RetroAchievements, then shows a badge: Compatible (your ROM is recognized and has achievements), Not compatible (recognized but no achievements, or unrecognized on a supported console), or Unknown (the console isn't supported yet, RA couldn't be reached, or it hasn't been checked). It also reflects whether achievements were earned in Hardcore mode.
Leaderboards & fair play
The headline global board ranks on lifetime GameScore, with additional boards for things like level, Credits, per-platform and per-game play, and speedruns - so you can compete on many dimensions. The boards are open to every signed-in player, not gated behind any purchase.
The server is the single source of truth for every Credit, GameScore point and rank. Awards are validated and rate-limited server-side, game ownership is verified against the platforms you link, completions carry a fee, each platform account maps to exactly one GameSave account, and anomalies are flagged for review.
Accounts that manipulate the economy or leaderboards can have awards reversed and may be suspended or permanently banned. Protecting the players who earned their place honestly is a priority.
